Show Varly on a prospect's site (Chrome extension)

For agencies. Show the visual editor and a page review on a prospect's own site, without installing anything there.

In this article

A prospect understands Varly fastest when they see it on their own site. The extension lets you show that in a sales call, before anyone installs the snippet:

  • Open the editor on this page: the visual editor on their page. Select a part of the page and change it, just like on a client's site.
  • Add a block in this site's style: opens the editor with Add a block. Varly reads the page's fonts, colors and buttons, so a block such as a USP bar looks like it belongs there. See Add ready-made blocks to a test.
  • Use an image: opens the editor. Select an area, then add a screenshot, design or sketch. Oran builds it in the site's style. This needs an AI key.
  • Show detected actions: marks the buttons on the page that Varly would count as actions, such as Add to cart or Sign up, with no tracking code. See Detected actions.
  • Review this page: starts a page review of the page and opens it in Varly in a new tab.

Who can use it

Owners and editors of an agency workspace. Viewers can't create tests, so the extension tells them to ask an owner.

Add the extension to Chrome

The extension is not in the Chrome Web Store yet. You add it yourself in a minute, with Chrome's Load unpacked:

  1. Download varly-chrome-extension.zip and unzip it. You get a folder called varly-chrome-extension. Keep it somewhere it stays, such as your Documents folder: Chrome loads the extension from that folder.
  2. In Chrome, go to chrome://extensions.
  3. Turn on Developer mode (top right).
  4. Click Load unpacked and choose the varly-chrome-extension folder.
  5. Click the puzzle icon in Chrome's toolbar and pin Varly for sales demos, so the Varly button is always in view.

It works in Chrome and other browsers built on Chrome, such as Edge, Brave and Arc. When a new version is out, download the zip again, replace the folder, and click the reload arrow on the extension in chrome://extensions.

Show Varly in a sales call

  1. Sign in to varly.ai in the same browser. The extension uses that sign-in; it has no password of its own.
  2. Open the prospect's website, for example their homepage or a product page.
  3. Click the Varly button. Under Save the demo in, pick where Varly keeps what you make:
    • New demo site for their domain: Varly makes a demo site under a client called Sales demos in your workspace. It has their domain but no snippet, and measuring stays off. The next time you open their site, the same demo site is used.
    • One of your sites: if the prospect is already a site in Varly, it's listed first with (this site).
  4. Click Open the editor on this page. The editor opens at the bottom of the page.

Each page gets its own demo test in Varly, called for example Demo: shop.example/products/linen-shirt. Your changes are saved there right away. Click Back to Varly in the editor to open that test in a new tab. The prospect's page stays as it was.

Go to another page of their site with Browse or a link, and the editor comes back on the new page. If it doesn't, the Varly button shows a small 1: click it and the editor opens again.

What the prospect's site and visitors see

Nothing. The extension never installs or adds anything to their site:

  • The editor runs only in your browser tab. Reloading the page without the extension shows their normal page.
  • The extension never adds the Varly snippet. Varly measures nothing about their visitors: no events, clicks, recordings or surveys.
  • Tablet view and Mobile view in the editor work too. Varly starts the editor inside them without sending anything to their server.

What goes where

  • To Varly: the address of the page you're on (when you click a button in the extension), and the changes you make in the editor. They're stored in your workspace, in the EU, like everything else in Varly.
  • To the prospect's server: only what a normal visit loads. Varly adds nothing there, and the editor's link never shows up in their server logs.
  • Oran: only when you use Use an image or a written change, with your own AI key, just like on a client's site.
  • Page review: Varly's own browser visits the page like a visitor would, from Varly's servers. It never opens the cart or checkout. Oran's part uses your AI key.

Security

  • The extension asks Chrome for as little as possible: access to the tab you clicked it on (and only after you click it), plus varly.ai. It can't read your other tabs or sites.
  • Each time you open the editor, Varly gives that tab a link that works for one hour, only on that website, and only for that one demo test. Click the Varly button again to get a new one.
  • The extension contains no passwords or keys. It uses your normal Varly sign-in.

Turn a demo into a real client

When the prospect signs, add them as a client and give their site the snippet, as in Onboard a new client as an agency. The demo tests stay in Sales demos; you can delete that demo site under Site settings once you no longer need it.

Questions

The editor doesn't open on some pages. Chrome doesn't let extensions run on its own pages (chrome://), the Chrome Web Store, or PDF files. Open a normal web page.

"Varly never changes or reviews cart and checkout pages." That's on purpose: Varly never touches a cart or checkout page, also not for a demo. Open another page.

"Sign in to Varly first." Sign in to varly.ai in this browser, then click the Varly button again.
