Read your survey results
See how many visitors answered, what they chose and wrote, and let AI turn the answers into themes and test ideas.
In this article
Survey answers tell you why visitors do what they do. Varly links every answer to the visit it came from. So you can compare visitors who placed an order with those who didn't, and watch the visit behind an answer.
The survey list
Research → Surveys lists all surveys of the site, with their Status (Draft, Live, Paused or Ended), the Pages they show on and the number of Responses. Click a survey's name to open its results.
At the top of the results page, one sentence sums up where, to whom and when the survey appears.
Filter the answers
The filters appear once the survey has answers.
- Device: All devices, Desktop, Mobile or Tablet.
- Order: Everyone, Placed an order or No order. Placed an order means the respondent ordered during the visit in which they answered. You see this filter once your orders reach Varly. See Orders and revenue.
The filters change the response numbers, the Response rate, the question charts, the individual responses and the CSV download. They don't change the AI summary, which always uses all answers. If no answers match the filters, the page says so, for example "No responses from mobile visitors", with a link to show all responses.
The numbers at the top
| Card | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Responses | How many times visitors answered at least one question. Below it: how many of them finished the survey. |
| Response rate | The share of visitors who saw the survey and answered at least one question, never more than 100%. Below it: how many answered, how many saw it and how many closed it. Everyone who answered counts as having seen it, also when their browser didn't report that it showed (for example because of an ad blocker). The card only appears once visitors have seen the survey. |
| Respondents who placed an order | The share of respondents who placed an order during the same visit. Only shown once your orders reach Varly. |
| By device | Responses per device, with a small bar for each. |
Varly saves answers one question at a time. So someone who answers the first question and then leaves still counts, and you still see their first answer. For a feedback tab, a visitor counts as having seen the survey once they click the tab.
The chart for each question
Below the numbers, each question has its own card with its type and how many people answered it.
- Choice questions: a bar for each answer, with the share of people who picked it and the number of people. For multiple choice, people can pick several answers, so the percentages can add up to more than 100%. For example, 75% next to "Size" means 3 out of every 4 people who answered picked "Size".
- "Other": the Other (own answer) bar counts how often people picked it. Below the chart, under “Other” answers, you see what they wrote.
- NPS (0–10): the Net Promoter Score in large numbers, plus a bar for each score. Promoters (9 to 10) are green, passives (7 to 8) gray and detractors (0 to 6) red. The score is the percentage of promoters minus the percentage of detractors, from -100 to +100.
- Satisfaction and rating scales: the average score, for example "4.2 average out of 5", plus a bar for each score.
- Text and email questions: a list of the answers, newest first. Each answer shows the time (in UTC), the device, the page and, if the person ordered during that visit, "ordered".
If recordings are on for the site, written answers have a Watch the recording link to the recording of that visit. See Watch session recordings.
Individual responses
At the bottom of the page, Individual responses shows everything one person answered, question by question, newest first. Each response shows the time (in UTC), the device, the page and whether that visit placed an order, plus a Watch the recording link if recordings are on. The page shows the latest 50; download the CSV for all of them.
Let AI summarize the answers
The What visitors are saying card reads the written answers for you. Click Summarize with AI. After a few moments you see:
- A short summary: two or three sentences on what visitors are telling you.
- Tone of the written answers: the share of positive, neutral and negative answers.
- Themes: up to six themes, biggest first. Each one shows its share of the written answers, a short description and up to three quotes copied word for word from the answers.
- Ideas to test: up to three A/B test ideas that follow from the themes. Click Save as idea to add one to Ideas. The idea links back to the survey as its research, and opens straight away so you can work on it. See Ideas.
The summary is written in English, and quotes stay in the language the visitor used. It doesn't update by itself: after new answers come in, click Summarize again. The date of the latest summary is shown at the top of the card.
To use the summary:
- Your organization needs an AI key. An owner adds it in Organization settings. See Add your own AI key.
- The survey needs at least 3 written answers, from text questions or "Other".
- You need the Owner or Editor role.
Email addresses are never sent to the AI.
Download the answers
Click Download answers (CSV) at the top of the results page. You get one row per person who answered, with the date and time (UTC), device, page, country, whether that visit placed an order, and one column per question. A question with "Other" gets an extra column, "(Other, own words)", with what visitors typed. Several choices in one answer are separated by a semicolon. The file opens in Excel, Numbers and Google Sheets. It holds up to 50,000 answers, newest first.
The download follows the filters on the page. With a filter on, the button says Download these answers (CSV).
Common problems
- "No responses from … visitors". The survey has answers, but none match the filters. Click Show all responses.
- "No responses yet". The survey is a draft or paused, or nobody has answered yet. If the survey is live and you expected answers, see Why is my survey not showing?.
- "Collect at least 3 written answers before asking the AI for themes." Wait until more visitors have written an answer.
- No Summarize with AI button. Your organization has no AI key yet, or you have the Viewer role.
- There is no Response rate card. Nobody has seen the survey yet, or nobody with the filters you chose.
