Site settings and the Install page

A tour of every section on a site's Site settings and Install pages, and what each setting does.

In this article

These pages are for one site. Settings for the whole organization, such as the AI key, are on a separate page: Organization settings. You open it with the Settings tab at the top of your list of clients (agency) or sites (brand). In this help center, Settings on its own always means Site settings, opened from Settings in the site menu. See Add your own AI key.

The Install page

The Install page walks you through six steps. A finished step gets a green check mark.

1. Which platform is your site on? Pick your platform from the list, such as Shopify, WooCommerce or Framer. The rest of the page then only shows the steps for that platform. In an agency account the question names the client. Varly often recognizes the platform by itself when you add the site.

2. Add the snippet. The snippet with a copy button, and where to paste it on your platform. On WooCommerce and WordPress this step is Install the Varly plugin: a download button and your Site key. The plugin adds the snippet for you. Prefer to paste the snippet yourself? Open Prefer to paste the snippet yourself? under that step. See Add the Varly snippet.

3. Turn tracking on. New sites start with tracking off. Click Turn tracking on once the snippet is in place. The same button turns tracking off again. You need the Owner or Editor role.

4. Check that data comes in. How many pageviews and clicks came in during the last 24 hours, and when the last event arrived. See Check that Varly is working.

5. Connect your orders. So Varly can show revenue per click and pick winners in A/B tests. You see only the way that fits your platform: a webhook for Shopify, the plugin for WooCommerce, or the order API for other shops. Sites without a shop can skip this step. See Orders and revenue.

6. Where do you want to read test results? Only in Varly needs no setup. With In Varly and Google Analytics 4, GA4 also learns which version each visitor saw. See See your A/B tests in Google Analytics 4.

How Site settings is organized

Site settings is split into sections: General, Tracking & privacy, Page groups, Recordings, Experiments, Notifications, Data storage and Delete site. Pick a section in the menu next to the page (on a phone: the list at the top). You see one section at a time, each with its own Save button.

Changed something but didn't save yet? Next to Save you see Unsaved changes, and the section gets a dot in the menu. If you try to leave the page or reload it, Varly asks first, so you never lose changes by accident.

Settings: General

  • Site name: shown in the menu, reports and the snippet comment.
  • Platform: your shop system or site builder. It decides which install steps you see on the Install page. The list is the same as on Install; choose Not sure yet if you don't know.

Settings: Tracking & privacy

  • Tracking on: when off, the snippet does nothing and no data is stored. Running tests pause too. Changes take effect within a minute. New sites start with this off.
  • Consent banner: which cookie tool Varly follows. Varly never shows its own banner; it follows the visitor's choice in your consent tool. Choose your cookie tool from the list, or Detect automatically. See Cookie consent.
  • Domains: Varly only accepts data from these domains and their subdomains.
  • Also accept data from localhost: for developers testing the snippet on their own computer. Leave this off for a live shop.
  • Never track these pages: one path per line, for example /checkout. Pages that start with these paths are never tracked or recorded. Keep your checkout on this list. If none of the paths looks like a checkout page (such as /checkout, /afrekenen or /kasse), Varly shows a warning and only saves after you tick My checkout is excluded under a different path, for example when your checkout lives at /bestellen.
  • Thank-you pages after an order: the page customers see after they ordered, one path per line, for example /thank-you. For some platforms Varly shows the usual path, for example /checkout/order-received for WooCommerce, with a button to add it. Varly can show a survey there, even when the page is under a path from Never track these pages, so you can ask customers right after they ordered. Visits there count in your data, but these pages are never recorded. A thank-you page can't be a whole path from the never-track list (such as /checkout itself), because that would switch Varly on for your whole checkout.
  • Exclude IP addresses: visits from these addresses are not stored, for example your office.
  • Exclude your own visits on this device: a link to open once in each browser you use, so your own visits aren't measured. See Exclude your own visits.

Settings: Group similar pages

Varly groups similar pages automatically, so for example all product pages share one heatmap. Here you can add your own groups with + Add a group, keep certain pages separate, and use Test a URL to see how an address is counted. Changes apply to new visits. See Group similar pages together.

Settings: Session recordings

  • How many visits to record: what share of visits to record, from Off to All visits.
  • Hide text in recordings: Strict, Balanced (recommended) or Relaxed, which decides how much text is hidden in recordings and in the texts of clicked elements in heatmaps. Passwords, form fields and dropdowns are always hidden.
  • Always hide and Always show: exceptions for specific parts of the page.

Click Save to apply. See Set up session recordings and Privacy in recordings.

Settings: Experiments

  • Statistics for A/B tests: Bayesian (recommended) shows the chance that a variant wins. Frequentist (p-value) shows a p-value, as in classic statistics. See Read your test results.
  • See your tests in Google Analytics 4: under Send test data to GA4, choose Automatic (recommended), Only through Google Tag Manager, Only through the Google tag or Don't send anything to GA4. Fill in your GA4 Measurement ID to get Download the Tag Manager file. See See your A/B tests in Google Analytics 4.
  • Send rage clicks to Google Analytics 4: adds a varly_rage event in GA4 and Tag Manager, so you can filter visits on it.

Settings: Notifications

Send a message to Slack, or to any webhook such as Zapier or Make, when an A/B test reached its planned duration, surveys got new answers, new test ideas were added, or no data came in for 24 hours. Paste the address under Slack or webhook URL, tick what you want under Notify me when and click Add destination. Each destination shows whether the last message was delivered, with Edit (change what it gets), Send a test message and Remove. A site can have up to 5 destinations. See Get notifications in Slack, Zapier or Make.

Settings: Data storage

This section lists how long Varly keeps each kind of data before it deletes it automatically, from 30 days for recordings to 25 months for orders, test results and survey answers. Recordings you add to your favorites are kept for 13 months. Nothing here can be changed. For the full list and what Varly stores, see Privacy and GDPR.

Settings: Delete site

Only an owner can delete a site. Type the site's domain to confirm and click Delete this site. This deletes the site with all its data, and running tests stop right away. It cannot be undone. Remove the snippet from your site as well. To pause measuring instead, switch Tracking on off. See Delete data.

Common problems

The fields are grayed out. Your role is Viewer. Ask an owner for the Editor role. See Invite your team and choose roles.

I can't find the snippet or the order connection on Settings. They're on the Install page, just above Settings in the menu.

I changed a setting but nothing happens on my site. Most changes reach the snippet within a minute. Reload the page on your site in a new window to check.
