Exclude your own visits and pages you don't want tracked
Keep your own team's visits out of the data, exclude office IP addresses, and choose pages Varly never tracks.
Your own visits, and those of your colleagues or agency, can make heatmaps, recordings and test results less reliable. Varly gives you three ways to keep data clean.
Exclude your own browser
This works wherever you are: at the office, at home or on your phone.
- Go to Settings → Tracking & privacy.
- Under Exclude your own visits on this device, copy the link. It looks like
https://example.com/?varly_exclude=on. - Open the link once in each browser you use, on each device.
From then on, Varly doesn't measure your visits in that browser. You also won't see surveys or test variants there, because the snippet stays inactive for you. You can send the link to colleagues, so they can do the same.
To be measured again, open the link with ?varly_exclude=off shown just below it.
Exclude IP addresses
Use this to exclude everyone at a fixed location, such as your office or your agency.
- Go to Settings → Tracking & privacy.
- Under Exclude IP addresses, enter one address per line, for example
203.0.113.7. - To exclude a range of IPv4 addresses, use a range like
203.0.113.0/24. - Click Save.
Varly checks each request against this list and doesn't store anything from these addresses. The IP address is only compared, never saved. You can add up to 50 entries.
With IP exclusion, the snippet still runs in your browser. You still see surveys and test variants, but nothing you do is stored.
Never track certain pages
Pages listed under Never track these pages are skipped completely: no pageviews, no clicks, no recordings, no surveys and no tests. By default the list contains /checkout, /cart, /winkelwagen and /afrekenen.
- Go to Settings → Tracking & privacy.
- Under Never track these pages, add one path per line. Each path must start with
/and have no spaces. - Click Save.
A path covers every page that starts with it. /account also covers /account/orders and /account/addresses. Capital letters don't matter. You can add up to 30 paths.
Good candidates are your checkout, cart, account pages, order status pages and any page with personal information.
All changes on this page take effect within a minute.
Common problems
My visits still show up after opening the link. Check that you opened it in the same browser and on the same domain you visit. Some sites redirect and drop the ?varly_exclude=on part of the address; in that case, add it to the address of the page you land on and open it again.
My test visit doesn't show on the Install page. You may have excluded your own browser or IP address. That is working as intended. Test in another browser, or open the ?varly_exclude=off link. See Check that Varly is working.
I get an error when saving an IP address. Use a single address like 203.0.113.7, an IPv4 range like 203.0.113.0/24, or a full IPv6 address. Ranges are only possible for IPv4.
My cart has a language folder, like /en/cart. The list matches the start of the path, so add /en/cart as a separate line.
