Delete a recording, a site, your organization or your account
What you can delete in Varly, from one recording to your own account, who is allowed to, and exactly what is removed.
In this article
Most data in Varly is deleted automatically after a fixed period (see Privacy and GDPR). Sometimes you want to remove something sooner: a recording that shows something it shouldn't, a site you no longer use, or your whole account.
| What you delete | Where | What is removed |
|---|---|---|
| A recording | The recording itself | The replay, its notes, favorite and AI summary |
| A site | Settings → Delete site | Everything of that site |
| A client (agency) | Client settings | The client, once it has no sites left |
| An organization | Organization settings | Every client and site in it, and your team's access |
| Your account | Account → Delete account | Your login, and every organization where you are the only member |
Delete a recording
Use this when a recording shows personal information, or when a visitor asks you to remove it.
- Open Research → Recordings and click the recording.
- Click Delete recording.
- Confirm in the message that appears.
The replay, its notes and favorite are removed for good. Click and page statistics from that visit stay, because they contain no replay of the page.
Delete a site
This removes the site and all its data: pageviews, heatmaps, recordings, survey answers, orders, ideas, tests and screenshots. Running tests stop right away.
- Open the site and go to Settings → Delete site.
- Type the site's domain in the box to confirm. The box tells you exactly what to type.
- Click Delete this site.
You then go back to the overview of your sites.
After deleting, remove the snippet from your site as well. Until you do, it loads but does nothing.
Rename or delete a client
In an agency account, an owner can rename a client or delete it.
- Open the client from your list of clients and click Client settings.
- To rename: change Client name and click Save. Links stay the same.
- To delete: a client can only be deleted when it has no sites left, so no measured data disappears by accident. Delete its sites first (Settings → Delete site on each site); the card lists them with a link. Then type the client's name to confirm and click Delete client.
Delete your organization
This removes the organization, every client and site in it, and all their data: pageviews, heatmaps, recordings, survey answers, ideas and tests. Your team loses access and the AI key is removed.
- Open your organization's overview: for an agency, the page with all your clients; for a brand, the page with your sites. Click the Settings tab.
- Scroll to Delete organization.
- Type the organization's name to confirm.
- Click Delete organization.
Your own login stays. If you are a member of other organizations, you keep access to those. To delete your login too, see Delete your account.
Delete your account
This removes your login. Anyone can do this for their own account, whatever their role.
- Click your name at the top right to open Account.
- Scroll to Delete account at the bottom.
- Type your email address to confirm.
- Click Delete my account.
What happens:
- Organizations where you are the only member are deleted, with every client and site in them and all their data.
- Organizations with other people keep going without you. You're removed from the team, and what you created there, such as ideas, tests and surveys, stays for the team.
- Your login, your sessions on every device and your connected apps (Claude, ChatGPT) are removed, and you're logged out.
You can't delete your account while you are the only owner of an organization that has other members. Varly then tells you which organization it is. First make someone else an owner on Team, or delete that organization. See Team roles.
Common problems
I don't see the delete button. You are not an owner of this organization. Ask an owner to delete it, or to give you the Owner role.
The delete button stays gray. The text you typed doesn't match yet. Type the domain or name exactly as shown above the box. Capital letters don't matter.
A visitor asks us to delete all their data. Varly counts visitors with a random ID, not by name, so you usually can't tell which data is theirs. You can delete a recording you can identify. All other data is deleted automatically after the retention periods in Privacy and GDPR.
