Quick start: your first 30 minutes
From a new account to data coming in, step by step, on any platform.
In this article
Varly shows you how visitors use your site (heatmaps, recordings and surveys), turns that into test ideas, and runs the A/B tests. This guide gets you from a new account to data coming in.
1. Create your account
Varly is in private beta. To get an account, join the waitlist. We let people in in small groups, in the order they joined, and email you a personal link when your spot is ready. The link works once, for 14 days, and only for the address you joined with. Invited by a colleague? Then use the link in your team invitation instead.
Open the link and create your account with your name and a password. Varly then asks what kind of account you need:
- Brand / web shop: you optimize your own site or sites.
- Agency: you manage several clients, each with their own sites and data. Team members can get access to all clients or only some.
If you came from your waitlist link, Varly selects the type you gave on the waitlist. Check that it fits, give it a name and click Continue.
You can't change this choice later, but both work the same way. An agency simply has one extra level: clients.
2. Add your site
Enter your domain, for example example.com. Varly visits the site once to recognize the platform (such as Shopify or WooCommerce) and your cookie banner, so the install instructions and consent settings are already right for you.
3. Follow the Install page
Open Install in the menu on the left. It walks you through six steps and only shows what fits your platform:
- Which platform is your site on? Pick your platform, or Custom-built or other.
- Add the snippet: copy one line of code and paste it into the
<head>of every page. On WooCommerce and WordPress this step is Install the Varly plugin instead, and the plugin adds the snippet for you. - Turn tracking on: click Turn tracking on. New sites start with tracking off, so nothing is measured before you are ready. You need the Owner or Editor role for this.
- Check that data comes in: see below.
- Connect your orders: so A/B tests can pick a winner on real orders. Not a shop? Skip it.
- Where do you want to read test results? Only in Varly, or also in Google Analytics 4.
Need more help with step 2? Read Add the Varly snippet, or the guide for your platform: Shopify, WooCommerce and WordPress, or Magento, Webflow, Wix and other platforms.
Varly only measures visitors who accepted cookies in your cookie banner, and never measures checkout pages. Read more in Cookie consent.
4. Check that data comes in
Visit your site in a normal browser window, accept the cookies and click around a little. Back in Varly, the Install page shows under 4. Check that data comes in how many pageviews and clicks came in during the last 24 hours. See Check that Varly is working if nothing shows up.
Once data comes in
- After a day or two, open Research → Heatmaps to see where visitors click and how far they scroll.
- New sites record all visits by default. Check How many visits to record and Hide text in recordings under Settings → Session recordings, so they match your privacy policy. See Set up session recordings.
- Start a survey to ask visitors what stops them.
- If you skipped it, connect your shop under Install → 5. Connect your orders. A/B tests pick their winner on orders, and Click impact shows which clicks go together with orders and revenue. See Orders and revenue.
