Choose where and when a survey appears

Set the pages, visitors, moment, position and how often a survey shows, so you ask the right people.

In this article

A good question at the wrong moment gets few answers. These settings help you ask the right visitors without bothering everyone else. Click Save survey after each change.

Where and for whom

Show on and Never on take page paths, one per line. A path is the part of the address after your domain, for example /cart.

  • A rule that ends in * matches every page that starts with it: /product/* matches every page under /product/. A rule without * must match exactly.
  • Leave Show on empty to show the survey on every page.
  • Never on always wins over Show on.
  • Anything after ? in the address is ignored. You can add up to 20 rules in each box.
  • To ask customers right after they ordered, click + Add the thank-you page after an order under Show on. Varly adds the thank-you pages from Settings → Tracking & privacy to the rules you already have. If you haven't added one yet, the editor links to that setting.

Then choose who sees it:

  • Devices: Desktop, Mobile and Tablet. At least one stays ticked: to stop showing the survey, pause it instead.
  • Visitors: New and returning, New visitors only or Returning visitors only. A visitor is returning if this browser visited your site before the current visit.
  • Page languages: only show the survey on pages in these languages. Use two-letter codes separated by commas, such as nl, de; the editor shows the language names below the box. Something that isn't a two-letter code, such as dutch, is marked red and can't be saved. Varly uses the language set in your page's code. If the page doesn't have one, it uses the browser's language. Leave the box empty to show the survey in every language. This setting decides who sees the survey. The language of the survey's buttons is under Language and texts; see Design a survey.
  • Traffic source: Direct, Organic search, Paid ads, Social, Email, Referral and Other campaigns. When all are ticked, everyone sees the survey. Varly uses the source of the first page in the visit, so someone who came from Google still counts as Organic search on every page after that.
  • Show to X% of visitors: the share of visitors who can see the survey. Each visitor stays in or out of that group on every visit.

When it appears

Pick a moment under Show:

Option When the survey appears
After a few seconds After the number of seconds under After (seconds), up to 300.
When leaving the page (exit intent) On a computer: when the mouse leaves the window at the top, toward the tabs or address bar, but not in the first seconds you set under Not in the first (seconds). Phones and tablets have no mouse, so there it appears after On phones and tablets: after (seconds).
After scrolling down When the visitor has scrolled through the share of the page under Scroll depth (%) (10 to 100).
After a number of pages From the page number in the visit under From page number (2 to 50), after After (seconds) on that page.
Only when your site asks for it Only when your site opens it with a line of code. See For developers below.

Where on the screen

Choose a Position:

  • Bottom right, Bottom left, Top right or Top left: a small card in that corner. On a phone, the card fills the width of the screen at the bottom.
  • Center of the screen: a card in the middle, with the page dimmed behind it.
  • Feedback tab on the side: a tab on the right edge of the page with the text under Tab text (up to 24 characters). The survey opens when the visitor clicks the tab. The tab appears as soon as the page loads, whatever you chose under Show.
  • Inside the page: the survey sits in your page itself, for example below the product description. Under Place in, enter the CSS selector of the element to put it in, such as #survey. Ask your developer if you don't know it. The survey appears as soon as the page loads, but only on pages where that element exists. It has no close button.

How often

When someone closes it sets what happens when a visitor closes the survey with ×:

  • Never show it to them again.
  • Show it again after some days: after the number of Days you set (1 to 365).
  • Show it again on their next visit: the survey stays away for the rest of the visit, also in other tabs. It can show again when they come back after at least 30 minutes away from your site.

People who answered never see the survey again, whatever you choose here. Varly remembers this in the visitor's browser, so on another device or browser, or after clearing browser data, the same person can see it again.

A visitor who ignores the survey, without closing or answering it, can see it again on the next page.

One survey at a time

Varly shows at most one survey at a time, and at most one per page view. If several live surveys match the same page and visitor, the one you created first appears. If that one can't appear on the page, for example a survey Inside the page on a page without its element, the next one appears instead. A feedback tab and a survey Inside the page also count as the survey for that page.

Some sites change pages without fully reloading them. Varly checks again on every new page there too, using the address of that page. While a visitor is busy with a survey, it stays on screen when they move to another page, and no second survey appears.

Common problems

  • "Page “…” must start with /". Enter only the path, for example /cart, not the full address with https:// and your domain.
  • A warning under Show on says the survey can't appear there. The page is on the Never track these pages list in Settings → Tracking & privacy, and Varly never runs on those pages. Remove the page from that list, or pick other pages.
  • "Pick at least one device to show the survey on". Tick at least one device under Devices.
  • The survey never appears. Check the list in Why is my survey not showing?.

For developers

With Only when your site asks for it, open the survey from your own code, for example after an item is added to the cart:

Varly.survey('SURVEY_ID')

The editor and the survey's page in Varly show the exact line with its id. The survey opens straight away. The settings under Where and for whom are not checked, so only call it where you want the survey to appear. Varly still skips it if this visitor already answered or closed it, and it only opens while Varly is running on the page.
