Check that Varly is working

Make sure the snippet is on your site and data is coming in, and fix the usual causes when it isn't.

After installing, it's worth a quick test before you rely on the data. It takes about five minutes.

Do a test visit

  1. Open your site in a normal browser window. A private window is fine too.
  2. Accept the cookies in your cookie banner. Varly measures nothing until a visitor agrees.
  3. Visit a few pages and click on some buttons or links.
  4. In Varly, open Install and look under 4. Check that data comes in.

What you see

  • Data is coming in: … pageviews and … clicks and other interactions in the last 24 hours. It works. The message also shows when the last event arrived.
  • No data received in the last 24 hours. Nothing has arrived yet. Wait a minute and reload the page. If it stays empty, go through the checklist below.
  • We can't check this right now. Try again in a minute. The check itself is temporarily unavailable. This says nothing about your snippet.

Heatmaps and other reports fill up as more visitors arrive. Give it a day or two before you draw conclusions.

Quick checks when nothing comes in

Most problems are one of these:

  1. Is tracking on? Look under your site name in the menu: it says Collecting data or Paused: not collecting data. If it is paused, open Install and click Turn tracking on under 3. Turn tracking on. New sites start with tracking off.
  2. Did you accept cookies? Varly follows your cookie banner. If you declined, or the banner isn't one Varly can read, nothing is measured. See Cookie consent.
  3. Did you exclude yourself? If you opened the link under Exclude your own visits on this device, or your IP address is under Exclude IP addresses, Varly ignores your visits on purpose. Test in another browser or from another network. See Exclude your own visits.
  4. Is the snippet really on the page? Open your site, right-click and choose "View page source". Search for varly. If you don't find it, the snippet isn't saved or published yet. Clear any cache on your site and try again.

Still nothing? Why is no data coming in? goes through every cause, such as a missing domain, a page that is never tracked or an ad blocker, with the fix for each.

Common problems

It worked, but stopped after a theme change. The snippet was probably part of the old theme. Add it to the new theme again.

Only some pages send data. The snippet is only in some templates. Put it in the layout every page uses.

My colleague sees data, I don't. You probably excluded your own browser or IP address. That is the point of those settings. Your colleague's visit shows that the snippet works.

For developers

Open the script address from the snippet directly in your browser, or type Varly.state() in the browser console. Why is no data coming in? explains what each answer means.
