My heatmap looks wrong
Fixes for a screenshot that doesn't match, clicks in odd places, pages grouped unexpectedly and heatmaps with few clicks.

Find your symptom below. If the heatmap says "No pages with data", start with Why is no data coming in?.
The screenshot doesn't match my page
Varly takes the screenshot itself. Things to know:
- It can be up to a week old. Under the map you see when it was taken, for example "Screenshot taken 3 Nov 2026. The live page may have changed since." When you open a heatmap whose screenshot is older than a week, Varly takes a new one. To get one sooner, click Take a new screenshot under the map. Meanwhile you see "a fresh one is being taken", and the heatmap refreshes when it's ready. Clicks from before a redesign still show on the new screenshot, so choose a period that starts after the change.
- It shows one page from the group. For a group like Product pages (/products/…), the screenshot is of one of those product pages. The clicks come from all of them. That is fine as long as the pages share a layout.
- It is taken as a new visitor. Varly is not logged in and has no items in the cart. Your cookie banner or a newsletter popup may appear on it. Pages that need a login can't be photographed.
- It is taken at one screen size per device. Desktop is 1440 pixels wide; mobile and tablet use a common phone and tablet size. Visitors with other screen sizes may see a slightly different layout.
- Very long pages are cut off at the bottom of the screenshot. Clicks lower down are still counted.
"Could not take a screenshot"
The message says why:
- "Varly can't open this address: it must be a public page on your own domain." Check the domain under Settings → Tracking & privacy → Domains.
- "The page blocked Varly. It may need a login, or block automated visits." Some security services block automated visits. Without a screenshot the heatmap still works on a plain background.
- "The page was not found. Check that it still exists."
- "The page took too long to load", "Your site returned a server error" or "The page didn't respond". Varly tries again later, at the earliest an hour after the last attempt, when you open the heatmap again.
Varly's screenshot visit is never counted in your data.
Clicks appear in odd places
Varly stores each click relative to the full width and height of the page at that moment. On pages that change while visitors use them, the dots can drift away from the element:
- Popups, menus and accordions that open, sliders that move, or "load more" buttons that make the page longer.
- Content that differs per visitor, such as personal recommendations, a filled cart, a banner for returning visitors, or prices in another currency.
- Stock and sale messages that change the height of the page.
What to do:
- Use the Most clicked list next to the map. It counts clicks per element, not per position, so it is exact even when the dots drift.
- Click Recordings next to an element to watch visits where someone clicked it, and see the element in context.
- Compare devices: a layout that changes a lot between screen sizes is easier to read per device.
Pages are grouped unexpectedly
Varly combines similar pages into one heatmap. Sometimes it combines pages that are not alike, or splits pages you'd expect together.
- Go to Settings → Group similar pages.
- Type the address in Test a URL and see what it is Counted as:.
- To stop two pages sharing a heatmap, add one to Keep these pages separate. To put pages together, click + Add a group.
- Click Save.
Changes apply to new visits only. Data that was already collected keeps its old group. See Group similar pages together.
The heatmap has very few clicks
- Check the device. Desktop is selected first. On many shops most visitors use a phone: try Mobile.
- Choose a longer period, such as 90 days.
- Remove filters. Click Clear filters. Filters and the Compare: option make each group smaller.
- Check which clicks you see. Rage clicks, Dead clicks and Before an error show only a small part of all clicks. Choose All clicks.
- The page is split over many heatmaps. If product pages have short names, each gets its own heatmap with only a few visits. Add your own group to combine them. See Group similar pages together.
- Only measured visitors count. Visitors who decline cookies are not measured, so the heatmap has fewer visits than your shop statistics.
- Clicks inside embedded content from other sites, such as videos, maps or payment widgets, can't be measured.
- Very long visits: to keep your site fast, the snippet sends at most 500 events per page load. Clicks after that are not counted.
My page is not in the drop-down
The page list shows the 25 busiest pages of the chosen period. A quieter page may not be in it, or it may be counted in a group under another name, such as Product pages. Check how it is counted with Test a URL under Settings → Group similar pages, or choose a longer period.
