Connect Google Analytics 4 (read-only)
Give Varly read-only access to your GA4 property, pick your purchase event, and see whether GA4 counts your purchases correctly.
In this article
Varly measures tests with your shop's real orders. Many teams also look at GA4, so it helps to know whether GA4 counts the same purchases. Varly compares the two and gives one verdict: Reliable, Usable with caution or Not reliable, with what to fix.
Varly only ever reads. It never changes anything in GA4, and it only reads the reports it needs for this check.
This is the opposite direction of See your A/B tests in Google Analytics 4, which sends test data to GA4. You can use both.
Add Varly as a viewer
- In Varly, go to Settings → Google Analytics 4 and copy Varly's address. It ends in
iam.gserviceaccount.com. Every Varly organization has its own address, and it never changes. - In Google Analytics, click Admin (the gear at the bottom left).
- Under Property settings, choose Property → Property access management.
- Click the blue + at the top right, then Add users.
- Paste Varly's address, set the role to Viewer, and click Add.
Check access
- Back in Varly, paste your GA4 Property ID under Check access. It's a number like
123456789, under Admin → Property details in GA4. You can also pasteproperties/123456789or the address of any GA4 page. - Click Check access. Varly opens the property, checks that it measures your site, and compares its events with your orders. This takes a few seconds.
If something is wrong, the message under the field says what:
- Varly can't open the property yet. Varly's address isn't added, the role is missing, or the ID belongs to another property. New access can take a few minutes to work.
- That's a Measurement ID (G-…). Varly needs the Property ID, the number.
- This property measures another website. Check the ID. If it's the right property anyway, tick Connect it anyway.
Pick your purchase event
Varly lists the GA4 events that look like a purchase, with the number of events, the revenue, a 28-day trend, and how well each one matches your orders. The best match is selected already, for example "purchase matches 96% of your orders by order ID".
Varly compares the 28 days up to 3 days ago, because GA4 needs a day or two to finish counting. It compares all your orders in that period, also those not linked to a visit. Where GA4 has a transaction ID, Varly matches it to your order numbers; otherwise it compares the counts day by day.
Look out for:
- Counts the same purchases as …: two events record the same orders. If both are key events in GA4, every purchase counts twice.
- No revenue: the event has no value, so GA4 reports no revenue for it.
- Orders counted more than once: the same transaction ID came in more than once.
Choose the event and click Use this event. No orders in Varly yet? Then Varly shows the events and their trend, and you pick the one GA4 records when someone buys.
Read the data health report
The report gives one verdict and a line per check, with what to fix:
- Orders: how many purchases GA4 recorded compared with your orders.
- Revenue: GA4's revenue against your order revenue, when both are in the same currency. GA4 is often a little lower, because it leaves out shipping or tax.
- Transaction IDs: how many events carry an order number. Without one, GA4 can't remove duplicates.
- Duplicates: orders that GA4 recorded more than once.
- Missing days: days with orders but no purchase event in GA4.
- Thresholds, (other) rows and sampling: GA4 sometimes hides or groups data. Varly notes it when GA4 says so.
Varly checks again every week. To hear when the verdict gets worse, turn on Google Analytics 4 data got less reliable under Notifications. Click Check again to run the check right away.
Sign in with Google instead
If you see Sign in with Google under the steps, you can also connect with your own Google account. Varly asks for read-only access and lists every property you can see, with the one that matches your site's address first. This is handy for agencies with many properties.
Disconnect
Click Disconnect in Settings → Google Analytics 4. Varly stops reading and removes the report. To remove Varly's access in GA4 as well, delete Varly's address under Property access management.
Common problems
"Varly lost access to this property". Someone removed Varly's address in GA4, or changed its role. Add it again as a Viewer and click Check again.
The verdict says thresholds. GA4 hides rows with few users when Google signals is on. In GA4, go to Admin → Data display → Reporting identity and choose Device-based.
GA4 counts more purchases than I have orders. A second tag or a thank-you page that sends the event again on reload is the usual cause. See Why revenue numbers differ.
"Google Analytics checks are paused". Varly has paused reading from Google Analytics for a while. Your connection and settings stay, and the weekly check continues by itself.
