Saved segments
Save a set of visitor filters under a name, such as "Mobile from Google Ads", and use it on Recordings, Heatmaps, Traffic & pages and Funnels.
In this article
You often look at the same group of visitors, for example mobile visitors from Google Ads, or returning visitors who did Add to cart. A segment saves those filters once, so you and your team can switch every tool to that group in one click.
Segments only filter what you see in reports. They never change who sees an A/B test: that is what saved audiences are for.
Save a segment
- Open Research → Recordings, Heatmaps, Traffic & pages or Funnels.
- Choose the visitors you want with Filters and the device buttons.
- Click Save as segment, next to the filters.
- Type a name, for example "Mobile from Google Ads". The window lists the filters that go into the segment; untick any you want to leave out.
- Click Save segment. The segment is now active on this page.
The period and the page you look at are not part of a segment: each tool keeps its own. On a heatmap, the device you are looking at is included; untick it if the segment should work on any device.
Use a segment
Click Segments next to Filters and pick one. The list shows each segment's filters. The page switches to exactly those filters, and the button shows the segment's name. All visitors removes all visitor filters.
Using a segment gives the same numbers as choosing the same filters by hand. You can still add or remove filters; the button then shows (edited).
Not every tool can use every filter
Some filters only exist on one tool. Recordings can filter on rage clicks, errors, length or labels; heatmaps, Traffic & pages and Funnels can't. Traffic & pages and Funnels leave out Placed an order, because orders are what they measure.
When a segment has such a filter, Varly never quietly changes the numbers. A line under the filters says what is left out, for example: Not used here: With rage clicks. The numbers on that page then count visits with and without it. In the Segments list, a segment with filters a tool can't use says so too.
Change, rename or delete a segment
Pick the segment, then open Segments again:
- Save changes to segment: appears when you changed the filters. The segment gets the filters you see now, for the whole team. Filters this tool can't show (such as rage clicks on a heatmap) stay as they were.
- Rename segment or Delete segment…. Deleting removes the segment for everyone; the filters on your screen stay.
Who can do what
Segments belong to a site and are shared with everyone who can see that site. Owners and editors can save, change, rename and delete them. Contributors and viewers can use them. A site can have up to 50 segments.
